Sioux Lookout, ON — Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA) is proud to announce it has been awarded the Accreditation Canada Primer Award—an important milestone in the organization’s ongoing journey toward full accreditation. This achievement reflects the dedication of SLFNHA staff and leadership to delivering safe, high-quality, culturally grounded health services to First Nations across Kiiwetinoong.
The Primer designation demonstrates that SLFNHA meets national standards for safety, quality, and governance. It signals to communities that their health services are backed by strong internal systems, transparent practices, and a commitment to continuous improvement. This recognition reinforces trust in a health system that has not always served Indigenous people fairly or safely and affirms SLFNHA’s vision of ‘resilient and healthy Nations supported on their path to wellness’.
Through accreditation, SLFNHA is strengthening the consistency and reliability of care delivered throughout its programs—from infection prevention and medication safety to emergency preparedness and staff training. These improvements translate into safer, more coordinated, and more responsive services for community members, whether they’re accessing primary care, mental health support, or specialized programs for children and families.
The accreditation process also enhances SLFNHA’s ability to advocate for communities. Meeting national standards aligns the organization with federal funding expectations, long-term grant requirements, and the broader push toward meeting community health needs. This positions SLFNHA to secure new investments, expand services, and build strong partnerships that benefit First Nations across the region.
Commendation was also given to SLFNHA for how programs are designed—grounded in population health data, shaped by meaningful community input, and guided by leadership representing the diverse Nations SLFNHA serves. Accreditation strengthens this work by requiring clear, structured processes for gathering community voice and responding to local needs. As a result, programs become even more reflective of Anishinaabe teachings, languages, and strengths.

In celebration of this milestone, SLFNHA is also releasing a new video, SLFNHA on the Path to Wellness: Past, Present, Future, which documents the evolution of the organization, the challenges faced across Kiiwetinoong, and the powerful stories of resilience that continue to guide community led services today.
