Despite the rainy weather, Sioux Lookout came together for Truth and Reconciliation Week, September 28 to October 2, 2026. Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA) worked alongside community partners to host a week of activities honouring Residential School Survivors, their families, and the children who never returned home. The week opened with a Sunrise Ceremony and included an Elders’ Tea, cultural workshops, and the Hands for Healing and Hope initiative, where youth created orange handprints as a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and hope.

On September 29, more than 100 people dressed in orange for the annual Walk for Truth and Reconciliation. The walk began at the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre and ended at the Royal Canadian Legion, where participants gathered to hear from Elders, Survivors, community leaders, and partner organizations. Survivors Pauline Lac Seul and Daisy Hoppe shared their personal stories, reminding everyone why these gatherings continue to matter. The event wrapped up with a community barbecue, giving people time to visit, share stories, and connect.

This year’s events brought together local organizations, schools, youth, Elders, and community members, and gave people opportunities to learn through hands-on cultural activities, including beading, drumming, hide work, and traditional teachings. The week closed with a Sunset Ceremony around the sacred fire, where participants shared reflections, songs, and teachings from the week.
Miigwetch to the Survivors who shared their stories, and to our Elders, community partners, staff, and everyone who helped bring the week together. Reconciliation does not end after one day or one week. It continues through the relationships we build, the stories we listen to, and the work we do together.
Miigwetch as well to our partners for making the week a meaningful success: Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre, Ontario Native Women’s Association and Sunset Women’s Aboriginal Circle, Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board, Sioux Lookout Public Library, the Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre, Lac Seul Bringing Our Children Home Initiative, and Kwayaciiwin Education Resource Centre.
