The Approaches to Community Wellbeing (ACW) is a regional resource to 31 First Nations Communities. ACW provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing.

The Cultural Advisor will play an integral role in providing advice and support to the Approaches to Community Wellbeing team in the areas of First Nations knowledge, culture, traditional practices, and community voices and stories to better reflect Anishinabe ways of knowing in the work done at ACW.

The Cultural Advisor is directly accountable to the Roots for Community Wellbeing Manager

Salary range starting from $55,966 to a maximum of $68,137/yearly based upon 1,820 hours.

  • A certificate, diploma, or degree in a health-related field would be an asset
  • Two years’ experience in the health services field
  • Background in teaching and/or facilitating discussions with diverse groups would be an asset
  • Previous experience or training in traditional/cultural healing services
  • Knowledge of the people, history, culture, language, and the health priorities of the First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout area
  • Ability to communicate, translate, and interpret in one or more of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout area
  • Experience with First Nations community engagement and First Nations decision making processes
  • Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality is essential
  • Strong communication skills with others on the team through active listening, summarizing, facilitating, and bridge building
  • Must be willing and able to travel

  1. Provide information and/or guidance regarding traditional values and spirituality to ACW Staff when co-designing programs, services, and communication materials
  2. Reinforce concepts of wholistic health from an Indigenous perspective during meetings, discussions, and cultural training sessions with staff
  3. Participate in teachings in the areas of Anishinabe languages, culture and healing practices as required
  4. Facilitate cross-cultural understanding and awareness among health professionals and ACW staff concerning traditional practices, values, and beliefs including:
    1. Develop standards for cultural competency training and minimum requirements for ACW staff
    2. Maintain a standardized resource library or teaching material
    3. Coordinate and develop regular cultural learning of ACW staff, including but not limited to monthly learning sessions and Community Wellbeing nurses’ orientation
    4. Facilitate training and mentorship of individual staff
  5. Develop and maintain a network of contacts, both inside and outside the organization, with people who may be able to supply information, assistance, or support for work-related goals. This includes building and maintaining friendly, warm, relationships or a network of contacts with people are, or might someday be, helpful in achieving work-related goals
  6. Consult with and seek advice from elders, traditional persons, healers and medicine people on traditional practices and beliefs and the ongoing development of ACW programs and services
  7. In conjunction with other ACW staff organize community awareness of traditional beliefs and health practices and/or incorporating traditional practices into programming
  8. Review materials produced by Approaches to Community Wellbeing for cultural appropriateness and safety
  9. Provide oral translation/interpretation during community visits and health promotion initiatives (presentations, videos, and radio shows)
  10. Provide written translation of health promotion resources and other needed documents developed within ACW
  11. Provide guidance directly to the public health physician to ensure cultural competency of public health guidance and direction
  12. Interpreting local community health needs into educational goals and objectives
  13. All other duties as assigned
