Northern Clinic Nurse

  1. The Northern Clinic Nurse will provide nursing care to patients in a primary care clinic.  The work will be carried out within the scope of practice of a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and/or Registered Nurse (RN) as permitted by licensure with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).The Northern Clinic Nurse is directly accountable to the Northern Clinic Manager.

    The position(s) are available on a casual basis.

    Applicants must possess:

    • Nursing diploma or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, BScN
    • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario, in good standing, or eligible to register within the province
    • Minimum two years of clinical/nursing experience preferred
    • Current cardio-pulmonary resuscitation certification
    • Mask fit test, or willingness to complete upon hire
    • Knowledge of and understanding of the Canadian and Ontario Health Care system
    • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of an interdisciplinary team
    • Cultural sensitivity and awareness
    • Ability to communicate in one or more of the Sioux Lookout region First Nation dialects is an asset
    • Excellent organization, evaluation, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
    • Knowledge of, and/or experience with, principles of adult and child education, social determinants of health, and population health promotion would be considered an asset
    • Knowledge and proficiency in current evidenced-based methods and practice of primary care delivery, with an emphasis on health promotion and risk reduction
    • Computer skills and e-mail experience
    • Knowledge of OSCAR, EMR system, Meditech is an asset
    • For casual positions: flexible availability or with short notice

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide primary care services as outlined in the College of nurses of Ontario’s- Practice Standards. The provision of primary care includes assessments, education, treatment and follow up
    • Provide care to individuals of all ages and their families, placing an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention which may include basic wound care
    • Document effectively and efficiently within the EMR and OSCAR
    • See patients and provide nursing skills (including but not limited to vitals, injections, follow-ups, requisitions, and suture removal as needed)
    • Collaborate efficiently with physicians and interdisciplinary staff members to facilitate appropriate provisions of primary care
    • Basic understanding of nursing station requirements and supportive measures to assist staff in the north
    • Operational and administrative processes in respect to the functioning of the Northern Clinic
    • Current and up to date evidence-based practice including but not limited to assessments and treatment
    • Participation in self-directed learning to ensure that practice remains relevant, along with taking training opportunities at least annually
    • Remaining adaptable with teaching opportunities to identify each clients’ individual health needs. This includes revising treatment protocols as required
    • Adhering to confidentiality policies on a constant basis
    • Maintaining stock of medical supplies, cleaning of instruments and pharmacy orders
    • Assist physicians with procedures
    • Arrange patient travel for transport to tertiary care centres
    • Ability to work independently and to assess/monitor client’s level of care and arrange transfer to other areas as conditions require. e. SLMHC- ER
    • Provide ongoing input towards further development of the Northern Clinic
    • Any other duties as assigned
