The Approaches to Community Wellbeing is a regional resource to 31 First Nations Communities. The Approaches to Community Wellbeing provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing.

The Meno ajimoowin anookiwin (Knowledge Translation Specialist) will be a key focal point for communities around health data and help translating data into information, knowledge and wisdom. They will help improve how health status reports and public health knowledge can better reflect Anishnaabe ways of knowing by bringing community stories, voices, and priorities into the data work. They will help communities identify data needs and priorities. They will assist with the ongoing capacity building of communities around data management, program evaluation, research, and epidemiology. They will facilitate the integration of different knowledge (ie. public health, research and Indigenous Knowledge) both within SLFNHA and with communities and regional partners (e.g. Tribal Councils). They will be responsible for collaborating and sharing useful health data that is analyzed within the Roots for Community Wellbeing or that is available through other sources (i.e. research reports) back with communities and helping them understand the data and put it into useful practices within the community (i.e. decision making, planning, evaluation, advocacy, funding proposals). The position will use community-based research methods and share decolonized approaches and methodologies.

The Meno ajimoowin anookiwin (Knowledge Translation Specialist) is directly accountable to the Roots for Community Wellbeing Manager.

This position will be based in Sioux Lookout, Ontario.

The salary for this position is $63,310 – $81,483/year based upon 1,820 hours/year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects within the Sioux Lookout area is ideal
  • Degree or diploma in a health-related field or Indigenous studies/knowledge or have taken significant course
  • 2 years direct work experience in health surveillance, population health assessments, data management/analysis, or research
  • Understanding of, and experience working in, decolonized approaches
  • Understanding of Public Health Systems and First Nations health systems
  • Understanding of First Nations culture, history, and governance – especially in northwestern Ontario
  • Understanding of Indian Act, Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, and the Truth and Reconciliation commission report.
  • Understanding and ideally certification in the principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP®), understanding of Indigenous health research ethics and community-based research methodologies
  • Strong understanding of epidemiological and statistical concepts
  • Ability to explain basic epidemiological and statistical concepts (i.e. rates) in simple language
  • Ability to develop and maintain respectful/cooperative relationships with First Nations people, communities, service stakeholders, and health care providers to promote an integrated seamless delivery of service
  • Presentation skills and creative communication methods
  • Experience in and understanding of planning and evaluation
  • Experience working both independently and, in a team-orientated, collaborative environment is essential
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Must be willing to relocate and live in Sioux Lookout

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Work closely with community-based workers to ensure appropriate data collection practices are used.
  • Work collaboratively with the Roots for Community Wellbeing team to develop health status reports that better reflect Anishnaabe ways of knowing by bringing community history, stories, voices, images, and priorities into the data work.
  • Work with communities and Tribal Councils to identify data needs and priorities.
  • Work with the Roots for Community Wellbeing team, communities, and Tribal Councils to identify indicators to monitor regionally as well as community-specific indicators that will support performance monitoring of programs.
  • Support ongoing capacity building of communities around data management, research, and epidemiology. Participate and direct delivery of training and educational activities for all communities. Integrate community-based research approaches, Indigenous knowledge, and decolonized approaches into the work being done.
  • Integrate decolonized methodologies into the work conducted, and if necessary, working with communities to build a shared understanding of what that means
  • Work closely with communities to develop data governance policies and Indigenous health research ethics. Work with and understand First Nations council structure and how decisions are made at that level.
  • Work with the Roots for Community Wellbeing team to develop communication materials supporting the dissemination of data findings to various audiences within the community (i.e. leadership, health workers, community members).
  • Share the health data that is analyzed within the Roots for Community Wellbeing or that is available through other sources back with communities in culturally appropriate ways and in ways appropriate to the audience.
  • Work with communities (i.e. leadership, health workers) to understand the data and put it into useful practices within the community (i.e. decision making, planning, evaluation, advocacy, funding proposals) and support public health practices.
  • Review research reports that exist about specific communities or in this region and work with communities to review the key findings and identify how to incorporate those findings into decision making, planning, evaluation, advocacy, funding proposals, and overall public health practices.
  • Liaise with other teams within Approaches to Community Wellbeing to support communities in their planning when they identify priorities through reviewing the data (i.e. linking them to the Raising our Children team if they identify concerns with breastfeeding rates).
  • Share knowledge and Indigenous Knowledge creation methodologies with Communities and ACW staff.
  • Provide assistance when required and any other duties assigned
