Communicative Disorders Assistant
The Sioux Lookout Area Primary Care Team (SLAPCT) provides primary health care, including chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention, to clients in the Sioux Lookout Region including the communities in the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority catchment area
Under the Sioux Lookout Area Primary Care Team (SLAPCT), the Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) will work under the supervision of a duly qualified Speech-Language Pathologist, in accordance with the guidelines for supportive personnel as set forth by the College of Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist of Ontario (CASLPO). The CDA will work with clients, caregivers and community resources to promote growth and development with our clients. The CDA is a key part of the client’s circle of care and will work to their full scope of practice.
The Communicative Disorders Assistant works under the supervision of the Speech Language Pathologist and is directly accountable to the PCT Pod Manager.
Salary range starting from $57,869 to a maximum of $70,454/yearly – in addition, yearly travel stipend available .

- Graduate from an accredited Communicative Disorders Assistant Program or SLP-A program
- Comfort level in managing clients with behavioural challenges
- Computer literate with experience in electronic client file entry
- Criminal Records Check
- Valid driver’s license

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Empower and support clients to improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living and working environments. Clients include those who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally or emotionally disabling
- Collaborate in the provision of Treatment plans that will enable clients to reach their full functional and work integration potential, in collaboration with all stakeholders (Client, Primary Care Team members, etc)
- Work with other health providers to formulate prognosis and recommend best course of intervention.
- Provide direct one-to-one and potential small group therapy sessions at our clinic location and/or through virtual means. (As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, sessions may be provided in various locations including homes, daycares/schools and other client locations as indicated by client needs)
- Collaborate and consult with the supervising SLP and other relevant Primary Care Team members in the client’s circle of care
- create and develop therapy materials as needed
- provide families with resources, information, and home programs
- assist with parent and client workshops
- Maintain documentation as per clinical guidelines and SLAPCT policies and procedures
- Provide information to help facilitate understanding and access to the assistive devices, program and other funding initiatives for special equipment.
- Work collaboratively with community-based service providers and agencies to meet identified needs and enhance delivery of care.
- Sensitivity to the needs of parents/caregivers and the ability to support and involve them in programming
- Collaborates with other health care professionals and community resources to promote comprehensive and coordinated care.
- Exercises care and caution in protecting confidential and sensitive information related to clients and personnel.
- Completes reports after each community visit (# of community members seen, planning/clinical meetings, meetings with leadership).
- Travel via air and road is a requirement.
- Experience working in a First Nations community and ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout Zone would be an asset.
