The Approaches to Community Wellbeing is a regional resource to 31 First Nations Communities. The Approaches to Community Wellbeing provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing.

The Epidemiologist will be responsible for developing and maintaining a health surveillance for 31 First Nations communities. The Epidemiologist will also be responsible for overseeing the data clerks and conducting data analysis to develop health status reports.


  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, or a related field.
  • 2 years direct work experience in health surveillance, population health assessments, and data management/analysis
  • Understanding of Public Health Systems (including Health Promotion and Protection Act and the Ontario Public Health Standards), and First Nations health systems
  • Extensive knowledge of epidemiology and statistics
  • Extensive skills in creating and managing epidemiological databases
  • Experience using statistical software 
  • Ability to communicate complex epidemiological and statistical concepts to health staff, community members, and other various audiences.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team-orientated, collaborative environment is essential; 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; 
  • Strong interpersonal skills; 
  • Knowledge of research methodology
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills;
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment; 
  • Ability to develop and maintain respectful/cooperative relationships with First Nations people, communities, service stakeholders, and health care providers to promote an integrated seamless delivery of service
  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects within the Sioux Lookout Zone an asset; 
  • Must be willing to travel;
  • Must be willing to relocate and live in Sioux Lookout


  • Develop, implement, and manage a First Nations Health Surveillance system to keep track of the health status of Sioux Lookout area First Nations communities
  • Oversee and guide staff associated with data collection and analysis at the regional level (i.e. data clerks) and appraise employee job results
  • Work closely with community-based workers to ensure appropriate data collection practices are used.
  • Work closely with the Associate Medical Officer of Health and Approaches to Community Wellbeing Manager to provide Community Wellbeing services to the 31 communities.
  • Assist Approaches to Community Wellbeing in developing and monitoring program performance indicators. 
  • Work closely with communities to develop data governance policies, and identify indicators they wish to include in health status reports.
  • Manage the preparation, maintenance, and submission of all health surveillance and health status reports
  • Plan, develop and implement systems that perform the work and fulfill the goals of the program efficiently and effectively.
  • To participate and direct delivery of training and educational activities for all communities
  • Support communities through the Anishinaabe Bimaadiziwin Research Program to conduct public health research
  • Support in the development and monitoring of budgets related to data collection and analysis initiatives.
  • Liaise with leadership, frontline workers, health care providers and other service workers in communities to collaboratively strategize means to tackle priority issues related to public health/community wellbeing based on the health status analyses of communities.
