TRADITIONAL SERVICES

The Traditional Healing Coordinator, the Traditional Healer and his assistant work together as a team and individually, working with individuals, couples, families and communities.  Another traditional healer working part time with NCFI (Nodin CFI) augments our services to meet the needs of children and youth.  Several other NCFI   staff are also traditional teachers and healers.  From time to time, we all work together when needed.

Traditional Healing Services are provided to NCFI clients and communities upon their request.  Through FNINIHB, the healer’s travel expenses and accommodations are covered when requested to visit any of our catchment area First Nations.

Individuals living in the Sioux Lookout area, seeking a traditional healer can self-refer and can be seen locally when a traditional healer is available.  Other traditional healers can be contacted by the Traditional Healing coordinator at NCFI, when specific types of ceremonies or other traditional forms of assistance are requested.

Clients can request services of a healer when receiving counseling through NCFI Acute Care services.  NCFI services also focuses on child and youth. Traditional counseling and teaching are provided to students at Pelican Falls Centre, including teaching students about drumming etc.  Traditional healing services can be made available to children in care at Tikinagan Child and Family Services when requested.

This health system has many parts: First Nations with their primary responsibility for their people's health, the secondary responsibilities of the Tribal Councils, the on-going Treaty responsibilities of the Government of Canada, the support of the Nishinabe Aski Nation, and other health organizations.  The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority wishes to contribute to achieving the vision of health and individual, family and community well-being by working in partnership with all jurisdictions in the Anishinabe Health System to provide excellence in population health promotion and system organization
