Osawa-Mikinaakoos  Oshkadisi-agamik
(“Yellow Turtle Youth Home”)
Short-Term Assessment and Treatment Residential Program for Children and Youth

In Ojibwe Teachings, yellow is the colour of the south, which is the place of the youth.  The  turtle symbolizes the Seventh Grandfather Teaching “Truth”.  When we are able to live with love, respect, humility, honesty, wisdom and courage, we are ready to live a truthful life.

OUR PURPOSE

Osawa-Mikinaakoos Oshkadisi-agamik uses a holistic healing model specifically designed to meet the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of Aboriginal children / youth who require residential services due to severe emotional dysfunction. This Short Term Assessment and Treatment Program provides cultural, clinical, educational and recreational supports which empower residents to use their own strengths and develop skills to continue on their path of healing.

PROGRAM GOALS

  • To reduce incidences of suicide and suicidal attempts among children and youth in our communities.

  • To provide a holistic healing experience in a supportive residential setting.

  • To reduce incidents of family violence, sexual abuse and intergenerational abuse.

  • To teach responsibility, accountability and the capacity to model and promote healthy lifestyles for youth.

  • To help our children/youth reconnect to their culture through the use of land-based programming and Aboriginal healing practices.

  • To strengthen the identity, self-worth and resiliency of Aboriginal children/youth.
